Medical Students and Physician Health Programs: The need to question unexamined, illegitimate and irrational authority in academic medicine

State physician health programs (PHPs) have been contaminated with an outside influence and support an agenda that has nothing to do with protecting the public or helping medical students.  They are a heretofore unexamined authority that on closer inspection reveals both an illegitimate and irrational authority and this mandates that all of their policies and practices be questioned.  We need to demand direct and straightforward answers to direct and simple questions.  We need to demand justification for actions based on sound science and critical reasoning.  The days of blind obeisance and deference to authority are over.  This is indeed a swamp that needs draining and let us make sure that occurs in 2017.   At this juncture it is critical that we take dead aim on the Federation of State Physician Health Programs (FSPHP) and their affiliates, get them in the crosshairs and take them down! . Don’t let them forget it. Thank you.
