“One of the saddest lessons of history is this: If we’ve been bamboozled long enough, we tend to reject any evidence of the bamboozle. We’re no longer interested in finding out the truth. The bamboozle has captured us. It’s simply too painful to acknowledge, even to ourselves, that we’ve been taken. Once you give a charlatan power over you, you almost never get it back.”
― Carl Sagan, The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark

Psych abuse. I sometimes chalk it up to Stockholm Syndrome. But psychiatry is now so trendy, no one even questions whether the DSM is based in any science. I’ve been reading Paula Joan Caplan’s They Say You’re Crazy, which I would recommend to anyone. I thought my own viewpoint was rather open-minded but she points out yet even more ways that we ALL are culture-centric in our consideration of what defines “normal.” Since when do one’s socks need to match or be a certain color, and if they do not fit the social expectation, is this a crime, and should the mismatched socks-wearer then be forced into “treatment” or assumed to be “violent” or incompetent to drive, raise kids, or work a job? It’s gotten that insane, and I can’t say we’re headed for improvement.
One of the most relevant quote of Carl Sagan that still applies in today’s society, and sadly, it seems it will still be relevant in years to come.
