Safety-Sensitive Occupations

Safety-sensitive jobs are those in which impaired performance, for whatever reason, could result in a significant incident affecting the health or safety of others. Doctors and bus drivers are both safety-sensitive occupations. Impaired doctors can harm patients and impaired bus drivers can harm passengers and others on the road.

The MBTA or “T” operates commuter railways, buses, rapid transit trains, and trackless trolleys. It operates every day of the year and provides ridership to about 700.000 people per day. With the safety of the riding public and the MBTA’s own employees a concern, the MBTA Medical Clinic exists to promote and monitor the fitness of its employees in “safety-sensitive” positions such as bus drivers and train conductors.

Physician Health Services, inc. is a non-profit corporation founded by the Massachusetts Medical Society that provides confidential consultation and support to physicians, residents, and medical students. PHS provides monitoring contracts for referred doctors.
